Macao's economy grew by roughly 80% in 2023 over a depressed 2022 base, as the lifting of mainland Chinese travel restrictions powered a sharp recovery in visitor arrivals and gaming revenue.

Mass-market gross gaming revenue led the rebound, while VIP segments remained well below pre-pandemic levels under tighter junket and cross-border capital regimes.

Visitor arrivals climbed back above 28 million for the year, with mainland Chinese travellers accounting for a dominant share of the total.

Government planners have used the recovery to push concession-holders to deliver on their non-gaming investment commitments under the new ten-year licences awarded at the end of 2022.
