Chinese automaker BYD reported 526,000 battery-electric vehicle deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2023, eclipsing Tesla's 484,000 units and marking a symbolic shift in the global EV race.
BYD's growth was driven by a broad lineup spanning entry-level Dolphin and Seagull hatchbacks to premium Yangwang SUVs, alongside its dominant plug-in hybrid range, which is excluded from the BEV-only comparison.
Tesla retained its lead on annual battery-electric volume in 2023 and continued to outpace BYD on average selling prices, but margin pressure deepened as it cut prices in key markets through the year.
The result underscores how aggressively Chinese automakers have leveraged scale, vertically integrated supply chains, and export ambitions to pressure incumbent EV leaders.
